While any human figure is by its nature a readily accessible image, a depiction of one’s self is an honest representation of a distinctive identity shaped by personal experiences in life. The self is in a sense limiting and inescapable, but also empowering and transcendent. Every person in life walks a path carefully balanced between the twin perils of self-absorption on the one hand, and anonymity on the other. The observation and depiction of one’s self allows for a deeper investigation in both one’s own unique affectations and one’s solidarity with others.
